Got this message when I switched to my Fire TV Stick 4K this afternoon.

"Auto Offload" feature to optimized device storage comes to Fire TV

Here's how it works.  If your device is low on storage, Auto Offload will partially remove some apps that haven't been used on the device in the last 60 days without deleting your login credentials.  When you want to use an offloaded app later, the app will be reinstalled for you along with restoring your log in credentials for that app, just like it was never removed.

This setting is automatically enabled.  To disable it, go to Settings > My Fire TV > About > Storage > Auto Offload > On/Off.

This is kind of how Roku does it.  Except Roku doesn't wait 60 days.  It seems only the most recent apps are loaded into memory and the majority are installed from the cloud when needed.

Let's see.  The last time I checked, I had somewhere between 400 MB and 500 MB free.  Let's see how much I have now...   It's taking a little while to get into Settings.  Go to My Fire TV, About,   I currently have 469 MB of 5.28 GB available.  Let's see if this goes higher over time.

Streaming represented 37.7 percent of all TV use in June, a high since Nielsen began releasing its Monthly Gauge reports in 2021. Streamers gained 1.3 percentage points compared to May, while cable (30.6 percent of TV usage) fell by half a point and broadcast networks (20.8 percent) slipped by two points vs. the previous month. Other TV use — including video came console play and physical media playback — increased from 9.7 percent in May to 10.9 percent in June.

Paramount+ made it to 1 percent of total TV use in June, becoming the 11th individual streaming platform listed in the Gauge rankings. Six others hit monthly highs in June: YouTube (8.8 percent), Netflix (8.2 percent), Prime Video (3.2 percent), Disney+ (2 percent), Tubi (1.4 percent) and Peacock (1.2 percent).

the Apple headset

The Apple headset is coming, and it’s called the Apple Vision Pro.

Apple on Monday entered a new category of interest to Hollywood: The virtual reality/augmented reality space, and the Apple Vision Pro is the company’s first product in that sector, as well as the first entirely new product category in nearly a decade.

The headset was announced Monday by CEO Tim Cook during a keynote address at the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference. It will “start at $3,499” and launch in early 2024.

And in a sign of how important entertainment will be to the product, Disney CEO Bob Iger appeared onstage during the presentation, calling the product “real life magic” and announcing that Disney+ would be available on the Vision Pro on the day it launches.

“We’re constantly in search of new ways to entertain, inform and inspire our fans by combining extraordinary creativity was groundbreaking technology to create truly remarkable experiences,” Iger said. “And we believe Apple vision Pro is a revolutionary platform that can make our vision a reality.”

The product will “allow us to bring Disney to our fans in ways that were previously impossible,” Iger added, with a sizzle reel showing a user immersed in an NBA game, placing themselves into an episode of Marvel’s What If …? or bringing a Disney World parade into their home.

The Apple Vision Pro is “a new kind of computer that augments reality by seamlessly blending the real world with the digital world. It’s the first Apple product you look through and not out,” Cook said in introducing the product. A dial lets the user decide how much of the world around them they can see, or can choose to be immersed in an app. People around the user can see their face if they can see around them, giving them a vision cue.

The initial pitch also included Apple TV+ shows Ted Lasso and Foundation in the sizzle reel.

And an Apple engineer, En Kelly, showcased cinematic modes, letting users watch content on screens in their homes, in a cinematic mode that places the user in a theater, or in real-world locations like at the foot of a mountain.

Apple claims Vision Pro could become a “personal movie theater” by creating a “cinematic experience” for viewing movies, series and sports. Announced features include 4K, HDR, spacial audio and stereoscopic 3D — suggesting that viewers could immerse themselves in James Cameron’s Avatar movies.

Rumored for years, Vision Pro runs on a new spacial computing platform — “the start of an entirely new platform,” the company claimed during the presentation — and has a 3D interface controlled by face, hands and voice.

With a glass lens and lightweight frame, Apple announced that it is working with lens maker Zeiss to offer vision correction in the headset.

The mixed-reality headset has been rumored for months and puts Apple in direct competition with Facebook and Instagram owner Meta, which currently dominates the (still very nascent) market with its Meta Quest devices.

calibrate your TV with Netflix

Netflix has a range of hidden test screens which let you calibrate your TV display, but enabling them really isn't obvious.

How to use Netflix to adjust your TV's picture quality 

1. Sign into Netflix
2. Select a chart
3. Add it to your list
4. Launch Netflix on a TV
5. Play the test pattern
6. Hone your display calibration

Visit https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/80018499 in a web browser and sign into your Netflix account. When you select your profile, the test patterns developed for Netflix will be available.

Next, select a Season using the dropdown menu and select the Multipurpose Chart which matches your TV's resolution and refresh rate. In this example, we will be using Season 2: Episode 8, which is for a 1080p (Full HD) 60 fps (equivalent to a 60 Hz) television.

Now simply click the + icon to add the test pattern to your list.

Now, launch the Netflix app on your television and go to the My List section. There you will find the test pattern is listed, allowing you to play the pattern on your TV when you open the app there.

You can now begin to alter the settings of your television, adjusting for brightness, contrast, color saturation and sharpness.

Sony RM-VZ320 universal remote

[5/20/22] Took home three TVs from my neighbor Steven.  Now testing it.

The first TV was a 32" Samsung (model UN32EH4003F, September 2012), but the remote didn't work.  So I took out my Sony RM-VZ320, but couldn't find the instructions.  Luckily I have the instructions saved as two pdf's.  One with the instructions and one with the codes.

So here's the instructions.

1.  Find the code.  Samsung is 00154, 00156, 00178, 00650, 00702, 00766, 00812, 00814, 01060, 02051

2.  Press and hold set for more than 3 seconds.  The SET indicator lights up.  While keeping SET held down, press the desired Device select button, then release both buttons.

3.  Enter the manufacturer's code.  The SET indicator flashes three times and turns off.

The code 00702 worked.  At least it worked to turn on the TV.  But not to control the menu.  00812 works better.

[12/29/15]  took home the Sony RM-VZ320 from Donna's house because I wanted to teach the eject button to the Philips universal remote.

First I had to enter the codes into the Sony remote.  Since the TV and DVD buttons were already programmed, I used the CD button for the codes (actually I messed up later and used the TV button for my TV, so I'll have to reprogram that button).

Anyway I found that these codes worked for my Panasonic TV:  00650, 01480 (looking now below, I see that I found that 00650 worked best).

One thing I noticed was that the sleep button works on my TV which was interesting because there's no sleep button on the original Panasonic remote.

I learned the red record button on the Philips to be the sleep button since that button is nowhere to be found on the original remote.

The code for the Sony Blu-ray player is 11516.  And as noted below the eject button works.  Decided to use the (-) on the Philips as the eject button.

What about Apple TV?  The code for that is 52615.

It works.  The menu button is the MENU button.  But apparently the play/pause button is not supported.  But I guess you could have the Apple TV learn the Sony remote (instead of vice-versa).

How about the Roku?  The code is 52371.

It works.  Partially.  Up, down, left, right, OK work.  The Roku home button is Menu on the Sony remote.  But there's no back button (the up button didn't work for me) and no asterisk.  No instant replay either.  [Well, playing around, I see the up button sometimes works like the back button.  For example when you're at the play menu in Netflix.  But it doesn't work in general as the back button.  In general, the up button works as the up button.]

So this remote had its pluses and minuses.  This is the only remote that I found that would work (at least partially) on a Sony home theater system (well I assume a Logitech Harmony would work too).  It supported the sleep function on my Panasonic plasma TV (a function that's not even on the original Panasonic remote).  It supported the eject function on my Sony Blu-ray player, which was not a function on the original Sony remote.

It mostly works on the Apple TV.

However the Roku support wasn't entirely satisfactory, lacking support for the back and * buttons.  So if you have a broken Roku remote, your best bet is to buy a generic remote from ebay.  Then if you want to minimize the number of remotes, get a learning remote to learn the Roku buttons, which is what I did.

So far I'm refusing to pay for a Logitech Harmony which can cost as much or more than the device you're trying to control.

[12/30/15] Donna now has HawaiianTelcom TV which uses a Cisco box.  Tried to program the RM-VZ320 for that box.  Didn't work.  Tried to search for the code.  Didn't work.

Took the Sony RM-VZ320 remote to Donna's house (to replace her broken Sony RM-ADP015)
Here are the codes I found that seem to work for her system
TV - Toshiba: 01256, 01356, 01524
Satellite Receiver DirectTV: 41377
Sony Home Theater DVD: 31622, 32522

The main reason for this remote was got get her subtitles working.  The B button works for this.  However a major disappointment is that the Menu button doesn't work, so I can't easily get back to the main menu after the movie has started.

*** [7/5/14] Bought a Sony remote control (Remote Commander RM-VZ320) from Best Buy.  This is intended for Donna because the remote for her Sony DVD player doesn't work.  Well, it's not strictly a DVD player but part of a Sony home entertainment system (with amplifier and speakers.  But hopefully it'll work.

I also want to see if it'll work with the Sony DVD/VCR combo in the dining room at my mom's place.  In particular, I want to see if I can access the setup to see if it's set up for a wide-screen TV.

I see the manual is online along with the code list.

Anyway, I tried it out with my equipment at home.

To set up any device, first press the SET button for 3 seconds until the light goes on.  Then while still holding the SET button down, press the appropriate device button (e.g. TV) then release both buttons.  The light should still be on.  Then enter the 5-digit code that you looked up in the code list.

Here's the codes that seem to work best for my equipment.

Panasonic 42" Plasma TV: 00650

Scientific Atlanta cable box: 50877 (the menu button brings up the settings menu), 51877 (the menu button brings up the DVR menu).  I can't find a setting where both the setting and DVR menu are both accessible.

Toshiba DVD-R: 12277.  Unable to bring up the setting menu (where you can adjust for the aspect ratio of the TV for example)

Apex TV: 00765.

Sony Blu-Ray player: 11516.  The subtitle button (the B button) doesn't work.  However the eject button does work.  That's interesting because the official Sony remote doesn't even have an eject button.

how to adjust your TV settings

Most people's TV settings are way off to my eye.  Usually the color is set too high (like people are radioactive) and often the brightness is too low (to offset the high color intensity).

The way I usually adjust a TV (I must have read this someplace) is to turn the color down to zero and make the picture black and white (or as close to it as possible).  Then adjust the brightness and contrast, so the picture looks about right.  And then turn up the color again just enough so the picture looks realistic.  Then tweak the brightness and contrast again.

Usually the color adjustment is a lot lower than most people are used to.  But I want the picture to look as realistic as possible.  Like I'm viewing the scene in real life.

In general, the picture settings on phones and tablets look about right to me.  Though, even on my Google Pixel 3aXL, I turned the colors to "Natural".  The other settings sere Boosted and Adaptive.  (Adaptive was the default.)

If I don't want to start from scratch, I generally just turn down the color until it stops looking radioactive.  Then turn up the brightness until the pictures doesn't look too dark.  Then I might adjust the contrast so the picture doesn't look too faded.

Anyway, this seems to work on most older TVs.  But when I tried it on my friend's Sony 4K TV, changing those settings barely changed how the TV looked.  I think HDR largely locks in the picture.  Also when I try to adjust the 4K HDR picture on my niece's TCL Roku TV, it still looks too dark.

PBS Live stream

After checking out Antenna Man's video about PBS live streaming in some areas, I was surprised to see that it was available in my area (Honolulu) on the PBS app on Roku.  (It wasn't available in my area last year.)  I wasn't getting my hopes up, but when I checked, the Live Stream is also available on my Fire TV Stick 4K.  This must be a fairly recent event because this is the first time I have noticed it.  [And it also worked on my Chromecast with Google TV.]

The PBS website shows the schedule, so I could see that it is actually the same as the OTA broadcast.  I would expect/hope that this clears the way for it to arrive on YouTube TV soon, so I would be able to DVR the shows.

the old aluminum foil trick

People have been posting on Facebook that they've gotten improved results from their OTA antenna by using aluminum foil.  So I decided to put it to the test.

Plugging in my rabbit ears antenna and orienting it toward the door, I'm getting the following channels

2-1 KHON-HD

2-2 KHON-CW

2-3 KHON-GT

2-4 COURT

4-1 KITV-HD

4-2 MeTV

4-3 KITV-D3

No new channels, but 2-1 signal looks weak

Now let me try the smaller toaster oven pan (with no foil).

Looks like the 2-1 signal becomes weaker

OK, let's take the last of the foil (about 7" x 11") and stand it a few inches behind the antenna and rescan.

I lost the 26-* channels.

Let me move the sheet of foil right behind, partially touching the antenna and rescan.

No change.

Now move it right in front, between the rabbit ears and the rectangle antenna and rescan

 No change, but the 2-1 signal seems stronger.  Up to about 72%.

Now take away the foil and rescan.

Got the 26-* channels back.

[Then tried wrapping the foil directly around the antenna ears.  No change.  In fact, maybe the 26-* channels got even weaker.]

Still no KGMB or KHNL that I got with the U-Must-Have antenna.  Granted I got those by moving the antenna to the window above the couch.

So YMMV.

et tu, live streaming service?

Cable TV has been steadily losing subscribers to streaming services for some time now, and it’s not expected to slow down. Newly revised projections show that 1 in 4 households plan to drop their pay-TV subscription in 2020, and nearly 40% of subscribers will drop service by 2025 That means 14 million U.S. broadband households are expected to drop traditional pay-TV packages.

These numbers come from The Diffusion Group, a syndicated research company. TDG analysts had previously forecasted US households with pay-TV subscriptions to fall in the 83.5 million to 87 million range by 2020, but the actual numbers are lower than that with pay-TV households falling to 81 million at the end of 2019.

And it’s not just cable subscriptions that are falling short of TDG’s projections. Live streaming options like Fubo, Sling, YouTube TV, Philo, and others are also unexpectedly dwindling. It seems like consumers are less concerned with watching TV live as it happens and leaning more toward video-on-demand options.

Eyesafe Display Certification

Display maker TCL says it’s earned Eyesafe Display Certification for Low Blue Light and Color Performance, which means its screens could be a bit easier on our eyes when it comes to eye strain.

There’s been growing interest in the effects of extended exposure to blue light, especially as TV makers continue to produce bigger and brighter displays. Earlier this year, Samsung announced it had earned “eye safety” certification from Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker (VDE) in Germany. Eyesafe says its standard helps guard against the harshest regions of blue light while ensuring high picture quality is maintained.

“Announcing that our devices and panels will now meet the best-in-class Eyesafe Display Certification sends an important message to our supply chain partners. This is a very momentous day for our company, and it marks a major achievement by our engineering and products teams,” TCL founder and Chairman Li Dongsheng said in a press release.

Roku remote problems (adventures with)

[1/31/20] Lost the connection to the Roku remote and had to set it up again to control the TV.  I tried code 6 as described below, but it didn't work.  Then I just tried to follow the instructions are normal and it worked!  Perhaps, Roku updated the software?  I believe when I followed the prompted instructions previously, I would control the volume but couldn't turn off/on the TV.

[transcribed from my 6/13/19 notes]  When I first tried to get my Roku Ultra remote to control my Panasonic plasma TV, it didn't completely work.  Changing the volume worked, but it wouldn't turn off and on the TV.

So I experimented with different codes.  I said "no" to the code that (partially) worked and kept trying different codes.  And I finally found out that code 6 works on my Panasonic.

If the Roku remote doesn't auto-detect your TV correctly, it's still possible that you could get it to work.  But you would have to manually look for the right code via trial and error.

[12/8/15] Noticed there's a another company selling replacement Roku remotes that may have been a better choice.  The company is gcegroup.  In their description for their replacement remote is "Quality talks! For same price why buy a cheaply made item? Cheaply made remotes out there don't have the little stabilizing pads beneath buttons/keys, and makes it feel like falling into a black hole when pressing the buttons, which kills the joy of "pressing buttons".  Among all the replacements you can find on eBay, we are very confident that our product quality is the best."  Well, maybe next time..

[11/23/15] The replacement Roku remote arrived today.  The buttons are a little mushy compared to the original Roku remote, but they all worked.  Good enough for me.

Proceeded to teach the Philips remote the Roku keys.  But at first I pressed the CBL button (which was being used for the Apple TV) and messed up the MENU and GUIDE buttons.  I actually wanted to use AUX for the Roku.

Programmed the up, down, left, right, and OK buttons.  That was straight-forward.  Then chose to program the MENU and GUIDE buttons as back and home, mainly because their locations correspond to the locations on the Roku remote.  Then the rewind, play/pause, forward buttons were also straight-forward.  I decided on the INFO button for the *.  And decided to map the replay button to the Philips L1 button because it's also labelled as INST REPLAY.

Then finally fixed the CBL mode (for the Apple TV).  Set the GUIDE button back to default (had to look in the instructions to see how to do that).  And re-learn MENU from the Apple remote.

So now the Philips is programmed for my Panasonic TV (TV), Toshiba DVD recorder (DVR), Sony Blu-Ray player (DVD), Apple TV (CBL), and Roku (AUX).  Unused so far are SAT and HD.

[11/14/15] As chronicled recently, the One For All remote has broken down.  A number of the keys stopped working.  Most of the keys for the Roku still work, but not the right arrow key.

I was going to buy a replacement remote for the Roku, but I wound up buying a Philips universal learning remote.  The idea was that I could use it to replace the One For All plus it had a code for the Roku.  And even if the code failed, I figured I might be able to learn the Roku codes from the One For All which occasionally would start working before not working again.

Anyway, the code didn't work and the the One For All seems to be degrading further, so I decided to order a replacement remote from eBay (partsoutletstore).  Looking at my entry just below, they now are going for about half the price (in the $7 range) from a year ago.  Then I can teach the Roku to the Philips.  Stay tuned.

[11/7/14] Apparently the remote for my Roku HD is wearing out.

At one time, it seemed to stop working, but then it started working again.

But when it works, sometimes I have to hold the button down for a period of time before the signal "catches".

Anyway, it stopped working again, so I went around looking for a replacement.

The Roku site sells a replacement remote (Roku Standard Remote) for $15.  Ebay wasn't any better.

$15?  Well, I figured I could use the Roku app on my iPad in the meantime.  And maybe I could find a used one cheaper on ebay.  (No such luck).

In the meantime, my remote for my Toshiba DVD-Recorder stopped working.  So I wound up buying a One For All universal remote (see separate blog entry).  Unfortunately, the pre-programmed code didn't activate the setup button in which I could enter the setup menu or access the menu to finalize DVDs.  It's a JP1 remote which apparently is customizable so I haven't completely given up hope.

Anyway, the One For All remote supposedly supports the Roku.  It has a code in the manual, but when I tried it, the Roku wouldn't respond.  However the code for the Apple TV worked.

OK, maybe the Roku HD was bad.  So I took it to my mom's place and tried it on her Roku 2.  And it didn't work.  So maybe it's the remote after all.

Then to complicate matters a bit, my dsl modem/router went bad, so I had switched to a backup modem in tandem with my old Belkin wireless router.  But then the replacement modem/router (Pace) came.

So I couldn't use my Roku app to control the Roku on the Pace network since the Roku was never connected to it.  I had the Belkin setup as I'm having problems connecting my Vista laptop to it (that's another story).  OK plug in the Pace, but don't connect it to the internet.  And let's try that.  Maybe you don't need the internet connection for it to work with the Roku app?

The Roku connected, but not to the internet of course.  But then I couldn't connect to the new modem/router with my ipad because it wasn't connected to the internet  (or something).  Anyway Roku app wasn't connecting with the Roku.  And I had a stuck Roku.

OK what to do?  Unplug the backup modem.  Plug in the Pace and connect the phone line for internet access.  Then attach my Belkin router to the Pace.  It didn't seem to work at first.  But after a while the connection took.  I think I just had to wait.

OK, so now I have two wireless networks set up simultaneously.  You can either connect to the new modem/router (Pace) or my old Belkin router.

OK,  The Roku was still unresponsive, so unplug it and plug back in.  The Roku was connected to the Belkin.  So connect the iPad to the Belkin.  Then the Roku app worked since they were both on the same network.  Then go to settings and connect to the Pace.  OK that worked.  So now the Roku is set up to go either to the Pace or Belkin whichever one happens to be running.

In the meantime, I kept trying the flaky Roku remote and it started working again, though often I would have to press the button for a while.  It seemed to be working a little better.

Hey, why not try to learn the remote with the One For All remote.  OK, look up the manual (OARUSB04G_Manual.pdf).  You have to press and hold the LEARN button, then the device key, the press the button you want to learn.  It flashes.  Then you aim the original remote at the One For All.  If the button is learned, then it flashes twice.  [Then Press and hold the LEARN key to save your settings.

OK, let's try.  Hey it's starting to work!  I couldn't map the * key for some reason to the key I wanted at first so I tried the INFO button and that worked.  I even mapped the Roku play/pause key twice -- one to the pause button and again to the play button.  However I couldn't get the OK key to work.  It wasn't working on the Roku remote.  But then it started to work sporadically.  But I couldn't get it to learn.  But I kept trying and on like the 20th try or something, it finally worked!

So I finally got a working Roku again.  I had been tempted to buy a new Roku (roku.com was selling the Roku LT for $39.95 while supplies last) since I had thought the Roku unit might be bad.  But it turns out not.  So I don't have to.

yay.

now to get my Toshiba DVD-player going.

U Must Have Antenna

[5/7/19] Saw this antenna on sale at Amazon and it had good ratings, so I decided to try it out.   It think it was a $25 or $30 antenna and I got it for $15.45.  [I no longer see the item being sold at Amazon -- but the 1byone antenna seems similar.]

This antenna comes with an amplifier, but I first tried it without it first.

My first attempt was to put the antenna above the hallway.  That way it had better height than if I just put it next to the TV.

The first scan caught 18 channels plus 3 channels that were weak.

Then I plugged in the amplified and it caught only 9 channels.

Finally I tried extending the cable and put it by the couch near the window.  That gave the best results catching 31 channels plus 4 weak channels.

A few weeks later [5/31/19], I hooked it up to the TV at the back of the house.  It caught only 4 channels.

So I can get a good signal at my house, but it has to be at the front of the house, not the back.

Saw this video from Reviews.org on youtube comparing antennas from Amazon.  The winner was the one from Vansky.  It's currently selling for $22.99, so I'm tempted to try this next.

Then saw this video from Freakin' reviews on youtube.  The $3 antenna was just about as the good as the more expensive models.

The OTT race

Sling remains the largest player in the total OTT pay-TV landscape with over 2.34 million subscribers. DirecTV Now T had hit 1.8 million subscribers by the end of June, which means the two largest players now control over two thirds of the more than 6 million total OTT pay-TV subscribers, according to Digiday.

While Sling leads the pack, the gap with DirecTV Now is shrinking, with only 535,000 separating the two providers, down from 836,000 at the end of the first quarter. While Sling had 41,000 net adds in the second quarter, the pace of expansion is slowing, as the service added 120,000 subscribers in the second quarter of 2017 and 91,000 subscribers in the first quarter of 2018. In contrast, DirecTV Now added 342,000 subscribers in the second quarter versus 152,000 in same period in 2017 and 312,000 in the first quarter of 2018. We expect that DirecTV Now will overtake Sling within the next year, but that YouTube TV and Hulu with Live TV will expand faster than their slightly older peers.

[6/26/18] Well, I returned the boxes and canceled Spectrum.  But I'm still getting some channels via direct connect.  I guess they don't bother disconnecting it since it's now carrying only the few oddball channels.  Maybe they think I might re-subscribe?

Anyway I decided to rescan since I wasn't getting a couple channels that I got on previous scan.  Here's what I'm getting now.

No Olelo anymore.  I did get CW HD on 108-1 at first, but that lasted less than an hour.

[5/12/18] That was fast.  The cable boxes arrived the next day via Priority Mail 1-Day.  I hate for them to waste all that postage.  I guess they figure they'll make it up eventually with the monthly rental fees.

Hook it up and let's see.

Got some loading message or something on the screen.  In the meantime, set up the remote for my TV.  Then the power went off on the cable box.  Turn it on with the remote.

Then got the message your TV will be right with you.  Wait several more minutes.

Now there's a message "To Restore Or Activate Services  Call us at 643-2100.  But the pamphlet says to call 1-877-309-5869.  I wonder if it goes to the same place?  I'll call the 877 number since I remember the last time (at the in-laws) I called the local number and I had to speak to somebody.

Activate digital receiver cable box.  Nope, went to somebody talking.

Asked for my name, address.  Then the last 4-digits of my SS#.  Now on hold, waiting for the next person.

Wait a few more minutes and the signal came in.

Let's see.  Nope, no Spectrum Sports.  Mentioned briefly to the rep that the other rep said I would get Spectrum Sports.  She seemed sympathetic.  And also gave me a tip that if I pressed Guide twice I would get the option to view only the channels that I subscribe to.  OK, that's cool.

Hmm.  I'm getting the same problem that I got at the in-laws house.  The picture changes every other channel.  The solution was to reset the box on their side.  But they said if I had that problem next time that I could pull out the power and plug it back in.  Let's try that.

Nothing happens when I first plugged in the power.  Let me wait a while.

Now it says Acquiring Application Information ...
Then the screen went blank.
OK, let's turn on the power with the remote.

Yeah, so there are a lot of channels.  But the only main channels are FOX, ABC, CBS, NBC, TBS, PBS, CW.  I get the first five on YouTube TV.  I can get CW on demand (but not the live Saturday morning shows).  And of course PBS on demand.  The other channels I would be interested in are OC16 and XCAST.  But I don't know if that's enough for me to cough up $34 a month.

[5/11/18] Called Spectrum to cancel my service.  Told the rep that the only reason I had been keeping my basic service was that I was getting channels I wasn't supposed to have.  And that the main reason was because of Spectrum Sports (and secondarily CW).  She said I would still get Spectrum Sports.  So I caved and decided to order the cable boxes and see how it is.

Logging into the spectrum app (on my ipad) and watch.spectrum.net (on my laptop) shows the channels I'm supposed to get (theoretically).  I'll know for sure when I get the box.

I had earlier seen more channels, but maybe I didn't complete log out of the other account.  [Actually it was because I was looking at the Guide section not the live TV section.]  Looking the networks that's available On Demand, everything is locked out except for FOX, NBC, PBS, PBS Kids, Pop.

We'll see what I get when I get the box.  If I don't get Spectrum Sports (as I suspect), I guess I'll return the boxes.

I also asked the rep if they still offer the Basic service because when I tried to downgrade Tom at the Ward office, the guy said it's no longer available.  She said it's still available.  But I kind of doubt this too.

[5/1/18]  The dreaded day has arrived when Spectrum has gone all digital in our area.  While most of the channels are gone or encrypted, not all were.

Here's what my scan this morning turned up.  I'm going to cancel my service after this, so this will likely be the final lineup I post.

2/2/18 - try wait

2/1/18 - Spectrum to go all-digital starting Tuesday.  I guess they're going to remove all the analog channels?  Are they going to move any more of the analog channels to digital?  Well, we'll see if I can still catch anything without a cable box.  I think I'll still get the broadcast channels via ClearQAM?

I guess, not.  The FCC decided in 2012 that cable companies can encrypt the broadcast channels.  Goodbye ClearQAM.  I dunno, this blurb just says the cable operator can choose to carry broadcast channels only in digital form and that digital TVs with a QAM tuner should still be able to get them.  But this CNET article says that cable operators will be allowed to encrypt basic cable TV service which includes broadcast TV.

If they don't give me OCSports any more, it's probably goodbye Spectrum for me.  Stay tuned.  [According to this, Spectrum Sports is not included with Basic Service.]

Well, in Akron in November, customers TV went black.  OK, not looking good.

Apparently the signals will be encrypted.  Not looking good.  Maybe time to shop for an antenna.

OK, got a robo-call from Spectrum that they're going all digital.  Then I checked my bill in the mail.  My bill went up to $34.18 from $27.19 with this notice:

"Spectrum is going 100% digital in your area.  We are upgrading your TV service to 100% digital to bring you better picture quality, more channels and great entertainment options.  In the coming weeks. all channels will be delivered digitally and your television will require a digital receiver in order to watch these channels.  For more information call 643-2100 to learn more about how to receive your equipment."

Well, maybe I'll get the free cable box / digital adapter and see what kind of channels I'll get.  [It looks like it's free for two years.]  Then maybe cancel the next month if I don't like it.

11/22/17 - XCAST disappeared from 109-2.  Re-scanned and XCAST turned up on 110-1 with SURF HD on 110-2.  But then they disappeared shortly after that.  11/25/17 - Re-scanned again.  SURF HD showed up on 86-5, but was gone a few hours later.

11/5/17 - while going through finish labeling the channels again, I checked to see if the missing channels were back (didn't have to re-scan, but just entered the numbers of the channels that were missing from before, and the TV apparently scans for all the sub-channels of that particular channel.).  They're back!  PBS Kids (79-1), getTV (79-3), On Demand trailers (79-10), KBFD HD (114-5).  116-5 is also back, but it's now COZI TV instead of the Catholic Channel.  SURF also showed up at 79-4, but we'll see if it (and the others) stick around.  And XCAST HD (109-2) has stuck around.

[9/28/17] Noticed that CW HD and the Olelo digital channels were missing, so I decided to rescan.  CW is still missing and the Olelo channels have changed their location.   The Olelo channels (along with CSPAN2, ANTENNA, KWHE, TBN) have changed from 134 to 119.  Now gone: 66-3 CW HD, 66-63 QVC, 66-64 INFO, 78-21 KBS, 78-29 CIVIL, 78-30 TEC.  46-4 CW SD is still there, so I'm hopeful that CW HD might return.  But it's not like I watch it very often (I now watch the Arrowverse  shows when they come on Netflix -- the CW app is frustrating with their quirky subtitles and long commercial breaks).  Oh yeah, Oceanic is now Spectrum.

[9/29/17] Scanned again.  78-21 KBS, 78-29 CIVIL, 78-30 TEC are back.  And good news, channel 66 has moved to channel 81.  It's now 81-3 CW HD, 81-63 QVC, 81-64 INFO.  So didn't lose any channels after all.  108-2 is SURF (which pops up temporarily then goes away).  Yesterday also got an XCAST channel that has gone away.

[9/30/17] Noticed Spectrum Sports and OC16 HD were missing last night, so I scanned again.  Spectrum Sports has moved from 99-4 to 83-4 and OC 16 HD has moved from 99-16 to 83-16.  SURF is gone again, but XCAST showed up on 86-1 and XCAST2 showed up on 108-2 (where SURF had been).  We'll see how long they stay up.

[4/7/17] Decided to rescan the channels on my Panasonic plasma (because I felt like starting over).  Well, not totally nuts because I decided to rescan just the digital channels so as not to lose the labels on the analog.  Pretty much no changes.  The major difference is that the digital SD channels in the 83-90 range moved to the 47 range.  Also this time, no captions were provided by Oceanic during the scan (they had previously provided the channel captions for the main HD channels), so I had to re-input all the digital captions.  Also corrected KALO and KAAH.  I had them switched on the TV.  According to the Zap2It guide, KALO is channel 25 and KAAH is channel 26.  I put on TBN instead of KAAH because that's what shows in the corner when you tune to the channel.  Similarly I put on ION instead of KPXO.  Channel 23 is now Spectrum Sportsnet instead of Time Warner Cable Sportnet (since Spectrum bought out Time Warner Cable).

[10/30/16] MeTV is finally back.  Along with the other channels on channel 47 such as this and CSPAN.  So they were absent about 3-1/2 months.  I lived.

[9/11/16] ESPN News no longer on 122-2.

[9/7/16] Still no MeTV, but noticed today a new channel get TV (channel 79-3).  Like MeTV and Antenna TV, it plays old TV shows.  Right now there's an old Western on (apparently Tombstone Territory).  And now The Restless Gun.

Looking at the web site, it's a Sony company.  They have shows like Sonny and Cher, In the Heat of the Night.  Not many comedies, but I do see Nanny and the Professor, The Ghost of Mrs. Muir.

Oddly, I don't see it on the regular Oceanic digital lineup (yet).  Doing a search, it's channel 2.3 via antenna and channel 373 on DISH.

ESPN News has been on for a while on channel 122-2, so I'll add it to the lineup.  And I think I'll move the latest channel lineup at the top of this post and leave the comments below.

[8/6/16] My OCD compels me to rescan.  But before rescanning, I'm double-checking the labels (so I can re-enter them after scanning wipes most of them out).  Noticed a few more channels.  48-4 is the digital KIKU.  48-5 is KBFD SD.  48-6 is KITV SD.

Nope, still no MeTV.  Well there's another hour (or two) wasted (putting back in the captions).

[8/5/16] Noticed a couple more channels popped up on my direct connect channel list.  46-4 CW which is the SD counterpart to 66-3.  And 46-56 TEACH-f which looks like a public access channel.  I'll add them to the lineup.  Still no MeTV.  Don't feel like re-scanning right now.

[7/18/16] decided to rescan the Oceanic channels.  Now there's nothing in the 47 range.  Disappearing were MeTV, this, CSPAN, KALO digital.  However the "main" network digital SD channels in that range have been moved to: 83 DKHON, 85 DKFVE, 87 DKGMB, 88 DKHNL, 90 DKHET.

[7/16/16] Noticed that MeTV is no longer at 47-1 (or anywhere else I can find).  I see in the agreements with programmers document dated 7/4/16 that MeTV digital was one of the channels due to expire.  It's still listed as channel 126 on the zap2it guide.

[6/17/16] KGMB HD is back on 48.1.

[6/16/16] Well, still no KGMB HD.  In fact 48.1 disappeared from the list of channels.  So I'm going to do a new scan.  The problem with scanning is that all my labels that I inputted disappear and I have to manually set them again.  So at the bottom of the post, I will put the latest channel lineup with the labels I had put on.

[6/15/16] As of last night, I noticed that KGMB HD (48.1) has no signal.  This doesn't affect me too much since I subscribe to CBS All Access.  KGMB SD digital still works (47.9).  Couldn't find any notification of this on the Oceanic site.  It may be just a local problem to my area like KITV earlier.  We'll see how long it takes to come back, if ever.  KITV HD took over 2 months before the problem was corrected.

[4/19/16] Lost a few channels this morning.  CNBC HD is gone, CW HD is gone, KBFD HD is gone.  And OC Sports has moved to 99-4.  And it looks like KHON HD is duplicated at 66-3.  Or it could be CW HD since they show the morning news at the same time.  I'll know in abount 30 minutes.  Yep, it's CW.  OK, so only CNBC and KBFD are gone with OC Sports and CW moving to new channels.

Let's check the channel lineup at oceanic.com.  The lineups have been updated.  The digital lineup is dated 4/12/16.  The analog link goes to the digital adapter list and is dated 4/13/16.  The digital adapter link goes to the digital adapter list dated 6/26/15.  That could mean that Oceanic no longer officially supports analog and will phase it out.  Here's the old "analog" lineup dated 4/7/14 which lists CNBC on 51.3 and OC Sports on 51.1.

Ah. Here's something.  (I don't know how I would find this page if I didn't have it linked below.  Well, I guess I can google it.)

"On or about 4/11/16, Oceanic Time Warner Cable will be making technical changes to our cable system that may disrupt our customers’ ability to view unencrypted (“in-the-clear”) channels on a digital television or other device that includes a QAM tuner (a “ClearQAM device”). If this occurs, viewers will need to go into the settings menu on their ClearQAM device and perform a new channel scan in order to resume viewing these channels. Customers using digital cable set-top boxes will not notice any change. In-the-clear channels on Oahu, Maui and Kauai: CW HD from Ch. 50.7 to 66.3; KUPU from Ch. 50.6 to 116.5 (Oahu only); CNBC HD from Ch. 51.5 to 117.2; OCSports HD from Ch. 51.1 to 99.4 and KBFD HD from Ch. 115.3 to 114.5."

OK, rescan and see if I can get CNBC and KBFD back.

(Shucks should have wrote down all the channel number caption descriptions before I scanned because scanning wipes them out.  I only scanned the digital, so hopefully the analog captions are not wiped out.  Well most of them are at the old list, so no biggie.)

OK there you go.  KUPU is the Catholic channel.  Whew, the analog captions are still intact.  That saves me some work.  But my favorites are all wiped out.  OK, let's put the favorites back at least.

[3/27/16] Noticed a couple of weeks ago that KPXO HD 66-1 is now 46-1.  Updated the channel list.

[1/18/16] Hey KITV HD is back.  This is contrary to what the Oceanic guy (working at Reef's house last week) told me.  He said they're taking away those channels because we're not supposed to get them.  I found it odd when I noticed a couple of weeks ago that KITV HD was still available via direct connect at my cousin's house who doesn't live far away (even after my cousin had their service discontinued).

[11/11/15] Lost KITV HD yesterday (48-9).  Rescanned.  Nope still not there.  The KITV SD digital channel 48-6 doesn't come in either (see the analog channel lineup here).  Maybe Oceanic lost to rights to telecast it digitally (but no mention here).  Maybe they don't even know it's gone.  Well, we'll see if it (and when) it comes back.

[9/13/13] Oh well, it didn't last too long.  OC Sports HD is no longer on 115.3.  Looks like the blacked it out.  Funny it was working at 7:00 PM, then I went back to Rosanne and when I came back for the 7:30 PM game (Wahine vs. Northwestern), it was black.   And what's worse TW Sports HD is no longer on either at 51.2, though the SD signal is still at 51.4.

Couldn't resist and rescanned.  What do you know?  OCSports is now back on!  And a minute later, it disappeared :(  And now it's on again...  stay tuned.

[9/11/13] Latest scan.  Apparently Ion (KPXO) HD is no longer on direct connect.  It used to be on 46-1 for a long time, then I recently saw it on 66-1 for a little while, though I never saw a full screen picture (though transmitting in 720p).

However, more than making up for it is OC Sports back on HD.  This time it's on 115.3.  I've seen it on for a day or so.  We'll see if it lasts (cross fingers).  OC Sports is no longer on 82.1 (SD) and 51.1 (HD).  Just on 16 and 115.3 (as far as I can see).

That direct connection TV lineup on Oceanic.com is outdated.  They do have Me TV on channel 47.1.  And Antenna TV on 134.13.  CNBC on 51.3.  But not This on 47.2.

[8/23/12] In the mail, I get a notice that Oceanic is no longer going to carry CNBC on analog.  One more reason to drop Oceanic.  Looking at the latest agreements with programmers:
